If You Were to Get Trapped in a Book

The other day I was asked if I had any hobbies. That is a tricky question for a mom that is always on the move, judging EVERY.SINGLE.THING solely on space efficiency. In past years I would have immediately responded with soliloquies about my horses or piano.

After some thought, I realized that in this season of my busy mom life, I consider my hobbies to be reading, writing and thinking deep, deep thoughts while I vacuum. Now because I was vacuuming up the weekend messes while coming to these conclusions, I had this fun thought: “what book would I want to be stuck in for a month?”

That led to a list of books so long, I hollered at the kids playing outside in the mud to hurry inside and tromp through the house, so I could keep thinking…I mean vacuuming.

It took some major deliberation but I finally came to the conclusion that if I were to get trapped in a book, my pick would be Gone Away Lake. It is one of my absolute childhood favorites and as an adult, I still love re-reading it. The adventure and intrigue, the characters and the historical mystery has always greatly appealed to me.

I can not figure out how to keep the image from getting chopped!

What book would you pick? You could even pick two. Or three. There are no rules!

Let me know in the comments!

What an intriguing question! I think that I would like to be in Annie Dillard’s book “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek”, tromping around the Blue Ridge Mountains with Ms. Dillard and asking her an endless stream of questions, just to hear how her incredible mind works. I’m sure I would be very annoying!

I am going to have to add that book to my list of future reads! That sounds like something right up my alley.

hmm… this one is hard. I too have a book from my childhood which I adored – a couple really that I would love to be trapped in for a bit – Caddie Woodlawn and the Anne of Green Gables books.

As I think over my favorite books and series I realize that while it might be kind of cool to be trapped in them for a bit – I very likely would not survive them! This is definitely something I’m going to ponder a bit more though – it has me intrigued.

I would love to be friends with Caddie and Anne! You’re comment about wondering if you could survive your books made me chuckle…I had not thought about it from that angle at all!

I’d like to be trapped in either War Brides by Helen Bryan because I love the friendship between the women or The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness because I fell a little bit in love with all the characters. Both books (the second is actually book one of a fab trilogy) are books I re read several times a year.
There’s also a part of me that wants to be trapped in an Ina Garten cookery book because I adore her and her recipes 🐷

This is a really awesome question! I think I would get stuck in “Faerie Rebels” if I were put in a survival position but if I could pick a really interesting place to be, it would definitely be “The Fountainhead” by Ayn Rand. Oof I definitely would not survive for an hour in that book…

I’m going to have to add Faerie Rebels to my Next-to-Read list.

That’s a great question!! I think, if I could spend a month in a book I would choose Alice Through the Looking Glass or one of the middle Harry Potter books.

Hmm 🤔 awesome thought… I will pick The Girl Who Drank The Moon. This story just really called to me and the witch in the story reminded me of my grandma. 💕

I’ve not heard of The Girl Who Drank the Moon. I’ll have to check that one out. Also, I love that your pick has emotional significance.

Love this question – and thanks for sharing that book, I’ve not heard of it before. Adding to my list of things to read with the kids when they’re older.

My first response when I heard this question was “ooh, Lordy, a month is a long time to be stuck anywhere!”

But then I closed my eyes and tried to think of a physical place I would long to be: life has been really busy lately so a white sand beach in the Caribbean came to mind. But I couldn’t think offhand of a story set there that didn’t involve hurricanes, pirates or shipwreck. And that’s not relaxing.

Meditations and mindfulness have really saved my sanity these past few months so I decided to pick Alan Watts’ The Way of Zen. A month of Zen practice would probably do me good. 🙂

Or maybe a cookbook. One with nothing but cake recipes. That sounds good, too. 😉

I wonder if there is a Zen Cake Cookbook………….

I sure as hell wouldn’t pick my memoir, I already know how that book ends! But you should all read it 🙂
It’d be Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein

Sooo hard to pick just one, mind if I narrow it down to three? I hope not… 1) Tokien’s _The Lord of the Rings_; 2) Any of Jasper Fforde’s “Thursday Next” series; 3) _American Gods_ by Neil Gaiman.

    Thanks for the great question!

No rules! I think those are some fantastic picks. I don’t know if I could make it in the Lord of the Rings. I’m going to have to check out the other titles…always looking to add to my reading list!

You MUST read Fforde’s _The Eyre Affair_, first in the “Thursday Next” series. It’s all about life inside of books, and Fforde has built an incredible, intricate world. Thursday is a Literary Detective who has to enter the world of various works of literary classics to combat ne-er-do-wells who want to alter the outcome of said books.

        Thanks again for the post!
